Getting a New Electric Service from CenterPoint Energy: What to Expect
By: Matt Pinkston - Master Electrician | September 28, 2026 | (Updated June 2026)
If you are building a new home, garage, shop, commercial building, or other structure that needs a completely new electrical service, there are several steps that must take place before CenterPoint Energy can provide power to the property.
A new electric service requires coordination between the property owner, Bright Electric, the local inspection authority, and CenterPoint Energy.
Because several parts of the process are handled directly by CenterPoint, it is important to understand who is responsible for each step and what to expect along the way.
1. Bright Electric Submits the New Service Request
Bright Electric will complete the necessary paperwork for the new electric service and submit the request directly to CenterPoint Energy.
We will copy you on the email so you know the request has been submitted and can follow the process from the beginning. New Electric Service
2. CenterPoint Contacts the Customer
After CenterPoint receives the request, they will contact the customer whose name is on the electric account to schedule a site visit.
CenterPoint will normally communicate directly with the customer for this step rather than contacting Bright Electric. New Electric Service
Depending on CenterPoint's current workload, it may take approximately 6 to 8 weeks for this portion of the process to be completed. This scheduling is controlled by CenterPoint and is outside Bright Electric's control. New Electric Service
3. CenterPoint Performs a Site Visit
A CenterPoint representative will visit the property to evaluate the new service request.
During this visit, CenterPoint may discuss the proposed service location, where their utility lines will enter the property, and any requirements that must be met before the project can move forward.
Once CenterPoint gives you approval to proceed, please contact Bright Electric immediately.
CenterPoint does not normally notify Bright Electric when the customer has received approval, so we rely on you to let us know. New Electric Service
4. Bright Electric Pulls the Permit and Schedules the Installation
After CenterPoint has approved the new service, Bright Electric will obtain the required electrical permit and schedule our installation work. New Electric Service
At this stage, we can begin installing the electrical equipment required for your new service.
Depending on the project, this may include items such as the meter equipment, service conductors, disconnecting means, electrical panel, grounding system, and other required electrical equipment.
5. Bright Electric Completes the Electrical Work
Our electricians will complete the electrical installation according to the approved project requirements.
Once our work is finished, Bright Electric will contact the local inspection authority and request the required electrical inspection. New Electric Service
6. The City Inspects and Approves the New Service
The electrical inspector will inspect the completed installation to verify that it meets the applicable electrical and safety requirements.
After the inspection passes, the city will notify CenterPoint Energy that the electrical service has been approved.
According to the process we provide to our customers, this notification is normally sent to CenterPoint within one business day of the passed inspection. New Electric Service
7. CenterPoint Installs the Utility Service and Energizes the Meter
Once CenterPoint receives the approval from the city, they can complete their portion of the new service.
CenterPoint will come to the property, install the electric lines, and turn on the meter. New Electric Service
At that point, the new electrical service is ready to supply power to the property.
How Long Does It Take to Get a New Electric Service?
The biggest variable is usually CenterPoint's schedule.
The initial CenterPoint site-visit process alone may take approximately 6 to 8 weeks , so it is important to begin the new-service process early in your construction project. New Electric Service
Bright Electric will move our portion of the project forward as quickly as possible, but we cannot control CenterPoint's scheduling or the timing of their utility work.
