As an electrician here in Evansville, I spend my days looking behind the walls of our city’s homes and businesses. But for me, it’s never been 'just a job.' I’ve always had a bit of an obsession with two things: the technical wonder of electricity and the rich, gritty history of the place I call home.
There is something incredible about standing in a basement on Main Street and realizing you’re working on a lineage of power that started over 140 years ago. To understand where Evansville is going, you have to look at the spark that started it all.
From the dim glow of gas lamps to the bright, bustling streets lit by electric lights, the journey of electrification in Evansville is a captivating tale of progress and innovation. In this article, we delve into the specific events, key figures, and pivotal projects that demonstrate how electricity has played a crucial role in the development and modernization of Evansville, with special emphasis on the role of electricians in this transformation.
Lighting Evansville’s Early Days: From Gas Lamps to Innovation
In the early 1800s, Evansville's homes and streets were illuminated by the soft glow of candles and gas lamps. Energy sources were scarce, and daily activities were often dictated by the natural light of day. Industrial operations relied on manual labor and rudimentary machinery, limiting productivity and growth. The city’s economy, primarily driven by the Ohio River's trade and transportation, was poised for a significant transformation with the arrival of electricity.

The electrification of Evansville began in 1882 when the Brush Light and Power Company began lighting streets with electricity. One year later, Brush Light and Evansville Gas joined forces to create the Evansville Gas and Electric Light Company.^ This company was instrumental in bringing electricity to the city. The first electric lights illuminated Downtown Main Street, replacing gas lamps and extending business hours into the evening. The public reaction to this new technology was one of amazement and excitement, as residents marveled at the ability to light up their homes and streets with the flip of a switch.

In the late 1800’s, the construction of Evansville's first power plant on Ohio Street located near the Ohio River marked a significant milestone. This plant initially powered streetlights and a few businesses, but its capacity quickly expanded. By 1892, the installation of electric streetcars revolutionized public transportation, providing a reliable and efficient means of travel across the city.° Skilled electricians were crucial in these projects, ensuring the proper installation and maintenance of the new electrical systems.

Did you know? When electric streetcars first arrived in Evansville in 1892, they traveled at a "lightning fast" speed of 10 to 15 mph! While that seems slow today, it revolutionized how our city moved.

One of the city's first electrified factories, the Evansville Cotton Mill located on St Joe ave on the westside, saw a remarkable increase in output and efficiency. This boost in industrial productivity laid the foundation for Evansville’s growth as a regional industrial hub.

The introduction of electricity was a catalyst for industrial growth in Evansville. Factories that once relied on steam power transitioned to electric machinery, significantly boosting productivity. By the early 1900s, companies such as the Hercules Buggy Company located at 119 N Morton ave (destroyed in a 2022 fire) and the Graham Glass Works on N Kentucky Ave had integrated electric power into their operations, driving economic growth and job creation. Electricians played a vital role in this transition, ensuring that the electrical installations were safe, efficient, and up to code.
The rise of new industries was evident in the burgeoning automotive and chemical sectors. The Servel Company, located where most remember the building being occupied by Whirlpool on highway 41 established in 1922, became a leading manufacturer of electric refrigerators, while the Mead Johnson Company leveraged electrical advancements to enhance pharmaceutical production. Electricians were essential in setting up the sophisticated electrical systems required for these new technologies.
The Electrification of Evansville’s Homes and Public Spaces
The process of electrifying residential areas was a gradual yet impactful transformation. By the early 20th century, more urban homes in Evansville started gaining access to electricity, a trend that accelerated significantly in the 1920s and 1930s. Electricity improved living standards by introducing household appliances that simplified daily chores. Electric stoves, refrigerators, and washing machines became common, making home life more convenient and comfortable. The first wiring method used for these installations was known as "knob and tube" wiring, porcelain tubes pass wires through lumber and knobs support wires along surfaces.

Garvin Park—established in 1915—later benefited from the installation of electric street lights, making the area safer for evening activities. Public buildings, such as the Willard Library, could operate more effectively with reliable lighting and electrical equipment, enhancing the community's educational and recreational opportunities. Electricians ensured that these public installations were well-maintained and functional.
The Social Impact of Electrification in Evansville

The rise of nightlife and entertainment venues became possible with electric lighting, transforming the social fabric of Evansville. The Majestic Theatre, located on 5th Street opened in 1909^^, was among the first to feature electric stage lighting, attracting audiences with its dazzling performances.
Education and healthcare in Evansville significantly improved with the advent of reliable electrical infrastructure. Schools like Central High School on First Ave were able to extend their hours and offer evening
classes, enhancing educational access for more students. Hospitals benefited as well; electric lighting and advanced medical equipment contributed to safer and more effective care. Established in 1892, Deaconess Hospital eventually incorporated electric power for general hospital functions and medical equipment in the early 20th century, a shift that enabled higher standards in patient care as the technology evolved. Electricians were indispensable in installing and maintaining the electrical systems in these vital institutions.
